Rep. Brian Yates, R-Jackson County, proposed the funds transfer. He said it would improve accountability for the money. Yates cited the fuel tax increase that was defeated on last August's ballot. He said he attributes its defeat at least partly to Missourians not having assurances the fuel tax money is used for state roads.

Sen. Brian Yates, R-Jackson County, introduced an amendment to link the SMSU name change to a similar name change for Central Missouri State University. Opposition to the bill in the house is a bipartisan effort, while the opposition in the Senate was headed primarily by Sen. Ken Jacob, D-Columbia.
2/10/2004 - The SMSU name change bill moves to the house today with continued opposition.:
The latest hickup in the bill's proccess is an amendment by Rep. Brian Yates that will also change the name of Central Missouri State University. Yates says this is about fairness.
